"And Labour made promises in their manifesto, promises they repeated in 2001 and 2005, to help the people in the North on whose support they have always depended. They failed you. They broke those promises," the Liberal Democrats Leader said.
Speaking in Newcastle this afternoon, Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg will accuse Labour of betraying people in the North of England.
He will say: "No-one has been more betrayed by Labour than people in the North of England. In 1997, Labour's landslide was built on a bedrock of support in the North. They won 139 of 162 seats.
"And Labour made promises in their manifesto, promises they repeated in 2001 and 2005, to help the people in the North on whose support they have always depended. They failed you. They broke those promises.
"Andrew Adonis says Liberal Democrats and Labour share a common purpose. He is wrong. Labour has abandoned the progressive ground they once claimed to own. In 48 hours, Labour will have published their 2010 manifesto. I can guarantee you will it be full of the same promises. And I can guarantee you that if you let them into government again they will break those promises for the fourth time. Do not give them the opportunity. Labour categorically does not deserve a fourth term. Do not hand the keys to Downing Street back to Gordon Brown.
"Send Labour a message. Tell them you will not be fooled by the empty words in their manifesto. The time for second chances is over. It is a two-horse race in the North between Labour, who let you down, and the Liberal Democrats, who stand for fairness, for change and for an end to broken promises."
