Key officers of the Hartlepool Liberal Democrats took the opportunity of Dr. Vince Cable's visit to the town to discuss their preparations for the forthcoming General Election with the Lib Dem MP, Deputy Leader and Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Dr Cable was here to participate in 'Any Questions' from the Hartlepool 6th Form College, and in addition to supporting Reg Clark's press conference at the Grand Hotel to announce himself as the Lib Dem Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, he gave the assembled officers the benefit of his considerable experience and insiders view from the highest levels of the party.
The Liberal Democrats, who finished a strong second to Labour in both the 2004 By-Election and 2005 General Election are, according to Reg Clark, pressing themselves strongly as the alternative vote to Labour in the forthcoming election which has to take place between now and next May. 'We are primarily trying to act a a focus for the anti Labour vote in the town to enable the constituency to make a judgement on the record of the current government. We will be telling prospective Tory and UKIP supporters that a vote for either of those parties will risk letting Iain Wright in again by default' he commented.
